MODELLING WINDTHROW IN RIPARIAN ZONES IN NEWFOUNDLAND by Jason Glode, MScF Candidate, University of New Brunswick

Abstract: The Newfoundland and Labrador Riparian Working Group (NLRWG) have identified windthrow in riparian areas as a key variable in developing a successful management strategy.  Through an Agreement with the DNR, the WNMF, and the University of New Brunswick, graduate work has been initiated in the development of a windthrow prediction model for balsam fir and black spruce forests of insular Newfoundland.  Using recently innovated water table mapping developed by UNB's Nexfor/Bowater Forest Watershed Centre, the project examines the relationship between depth to water table and windthrow occurrence.  The influence of other tree, stand and neighborhood variables on stand vulnerability to windthrow has been assessed in the development of a predictive GIS tool for forest managers who wish to develop a management strategy for riparian areas.
